Beg Command

How to Teach a Dog to Beg

Begging on command is a trained behavior that you can teach your dog in just a few simple steps. While it's not a good idea for your dog to be begging for scraps at the table, getting him to act like he's begging is a fun trick for him to learn. This is also excellent training for increasing strength his hind quarters. Moderation is key with any exercise, so start gradually and build up slowly to where your dog is comfortable.

  1. Place your dog in front of you and get down to his level.
    .
  2. Tell him to Sit and Stay.
    .
  3. Keep him in that position for a few minutes.
    .
  4. Show your dog a treat and let him smell it. Then slowly lift it up above his head, but correct him if he jumps for the treat.
    .
  5. When he squats on his back legs and lifts his front paws off the ground, give him the treat and praise him enthusiastically.
    .
  6. Repeat up to five times during the training session.

Reward every step your dog takes in the right direction with praise or treats during the training process. You want learning tricks to be fun. With a little bit of practice, your dog will be excited to show off his new talent..
