Drop It Command

How to Teach a Dog to Drop It

Training your dog to release something from his mouth on your command is a very powerful safety lesson for those times that he may try to eat or put something dangerous in his mouth, such as a chicken bone. It also helps prevent him from ever developing resource guarding of his chew toys or other items. By teaching your dog the Drop It command, he will either let the object fall out of his mouth or allow you to take something easily from him.

.

  1. Give your dog a chew toy he loves.
    .
  2. Offer him a treat.
    .
  3. He will probably drop the toy to take the treat. As soon as he drops the chew toy, praise him enthusiastically.
    .
  4. Immediately give the treat as you pick up the chew toy.
    .
  5. When your dog finishes the treat, offer him the chew toy again.
    .
  6. Repeat the steps with different objects until you dog understands that he is rewarded for dropping something.
    .
  7. Once your dog has mastered the trick, use the Drop It command to reinforce his training.

.

You will probably find that after a just few repetitions, your dog no longer wants to take the chew toy. That’s okay; you can stop the training session with a bonus treat.
