Flip a Treat Off Nose Command

how to teach a dog to flip a treat on his nose

Before you train your dog to do this trick, make sure he is well trained on Sit and Stay, because your dog has to sit still perfectly to balance the treat on his nose. This trick requires a lot of patience. Remember, this should be fun for your dog and you.

  1. Begin with a Sit and Stay command, right in front of you.
    .
  2. You can sit in a chair. Your dog's head should be resting on your lap slightly.
    .
  3. Place one hand under his head to raise his nose up until it's level with the ground.
    .
  4. Put the treat gently and slowly on the flattest part of his nose.
    .
  5. While you rest his muzzle on your hand, alternate the phrase Hold It in your command tone with enthusiastic praise.
    .
  6. After a few seconds, release the Hold It position and praise him. He should naturally flip the treat off his nose to eat it.
    .
  7. Repeat this process about 10 times daily for several days.

.

As your dog begins to hold his own head steady, begin to remove your hands slowly from his muzzle to let him do it alone. Command him to Leave It if he drops the treat, but allow him to eat the treat if he flips it. With consistency, your dog will be conditioned to flip the treat.
