Lay Down Command

How to Teach a Dog to Lay Down

Lying down is a challenging command for dogs to learn, but it’s very useful nonetheless. Dogs who understand it are much more welcome in public places and pleasant to have near the dinner table. It is also a handy command if you want to keep your dog in one place for a while.

Steps to Teaching Lie Down

  1. Ask your dog to sit.
    .
  2. Hold a treat near his nose and give the down command. Slowly lower your hand straight down to the floor between his front paws.
    .
  3. If he lies down immediately, praise him in a lively tone and reward him with the treat.
    .
  4. If he doesn’t lie down right away, cover the treat with your hand on the floor. He’ll probably figure out what to do and lie down quickly.
    .
  5. Reward him with the treat and praise him enthusiastically when he does.
    .
  6. Repeat several times consecutively.

.

.You can gradually make it more challenging. For instance, each time your dog lies down on command, add a one-second delay between when he drops to the floor and when you give the reward. Next, stand a step further away from him when you give the command. Finally, add in distractions, such as bouncing a ball or facing a different direction.
