Play Dead Command

How to Teach a Dog to Play Dead

When training your dog to play dead, praise him each time you notice he's lying on his side naturally. After a day or so, add the verbal cue Sleep when you see your dog resting. This will help to teach the Play Dead trick. Teaching this trick isn’t extremely hard if your dog has learned the Down, Stay, Roll Over, and Beg commands.

  1. Begin with your dog in the Beg position.
    .
  2. Give your dog the verbal command of Bang combined with a hand signal cue, such as pointing your fingers to resemble a gun.
    .
  3. After giving the Bang command, hold a treat close to your dog's nose, and pull it slowly over so he'll roll onto his side to get it.
    .
  4. As soon as your dog is lying on his side, reward him with the treat and praise.
    .
  5. If your dog gets up from playing dead sooner than you want, you can train him to lie there longer by counting off a few seconds before giving him the treat.
    .
  6. Practice having your dog lie on his side several times a day for a few minutes each time.

.Add a hand signal by placing your palms together and raise them to the side of your face in a sleep position.
