Stay Command

How to Teach Your Dog to Stay

The stay command signals to your dog that you want him to remain where you place him until you release him. You can use it with a sit or down command to help him know what you expect from him.

Steps for Teaching Stay

  1. Begin in a place that’s familiar to your dog without any distractions.
    .
  2. Keep your dog's focus on you by standing directly in front of him.
    .
  3. Look him in the eye so he is aware you are giving him your full attention.
    .
  4. Show your dog a treat in your hand and ask him to sit or lie down.
    .
  5. When he holds the position for a second or two, praise him and give him a treat.
    .
  6. Start the process again, having your dog stay for a few seconds longer rewarding him.
    .
  7. Once your dog masters the stay command, add a hand signal.
    .
  8. Ask your dog to lie down or sit, and then hold your hand out in front of you with your palm toward his nose. Give the stay command.
