Do I Need to Teach the Puppies to Eat Dry Food?
Puppies will naturally start weaning from their mother's milk. Each litter and breed is a little different. During the early phases of weaning the puppies will still be nursing their mom while your getting them adjusted to eating their puppy food. Over the next few weeks, as they get more comfortable with food, they will naturally nurse less. Don't rush the weaning process if the puppy is  slow to eat on their own or you can create problems for yourself and the puppy.  Puppies need to see eating as a positive and natural experience. Some breeds or litters just start eating out of their moms bowl with no help from you. Other breeds or litters need you to soften the food in warm water and offer it that way a few times a day until they can eat the hard unsoftened. While many breeds and litters require a more involved process of weaning which includes offering them a puppy mash at an early age, the moving to soften food mixed with canned food, then eventually moving straight to hard only. No matter which method you end up doing, it is important to teach puppies to eat puppy food. As their caregiver, you can help with this shift. Know your puppies and your breed so you can best understand how to wean them correctly.
