Licenses and Insurance Requirements
Protecting and legalizing your business is easier than you might imagine. Some cities require that dog walkers have licenses, and others even expect dog walkers to be insured and bonded. At a minimum, you will need to met the following requirements:

  • Liability insurance
  • A city business license
  • Register a business name
  • Set up your business as an LLC
  • Create service agreements or contracts

Owning a business means wearing several hats simultaneously. In the beginning, it may be a lot to balance, but in the end most people find they earn more with self-employment.

Equipment and Start-Up Costs to Consider
Compared to other industries, a professional dog walking business requires very moderate start-up and overhead costs. Individual business requirements vary, and the money needed ranges broadly depending on the type of services offered and whether or not a storefront is required. At a minimum, you will need a vehicle, education fees, leashes, first aid equipment, and marketing supplies. The good news is that 85 percent of professional dog walkers can open their businesses without having to borrow money.
