Dachshund Diet

What Should I Feed My Dachshund?

About Dachshunds
Dachshunds were introduced in the 16th century in Germany as a scent hound dog breed to hunt badgers. As a matter of fact, dachs means badger, and hund means dog. (Make sure not to offend a Dachshund owner by pronouncing it dash-hund; proper pronunciation is daks-hund.) Dachshund packs were even used to pursue wild boar.

Feeding Recommendations
This smallest of the hounds is meant to be tireless, agile, and robustly muscular. To maintain the Dachshund’s alert spirit and sturdy body, he will need an owner who will provide him with a high-quality diet, prevent him from overeating, and offer him plenty of exercise. We recommended feeding a daily amount of a half to one-and-a-half cups of high-quality dry food daily spread between two meals. Determining the correct amount of food to feed your Dachshund will depend on his size, age, how much exercise he gets, and any health issues.

Nutritional Requirements
Dachshunds love to eat, so keeping your Doxie trim is essential to his overall disc health because this breed is prone to spinal disc problems. Choosing a food with a balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids is necessary to help maintain and protect your Dachshund’s bone, joint, and skin health. The proper foundation is a good diet that provides just the right mix of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Even if your Dachshund has long hair, his coat isn’t super long, making him prone to dry skin. He needs a dog food with enough fat to keep his coat and skin shiny and healthy and provide him with plenty of energy. However, you want to pay attention to protein and carbohydrate content. At the very least, real meat should be the first ingredient on the label. Also, he also needs a formula that doesn’t contain wheat, soy, corn, or artificial colors or flavors.

What Brand is Best
Diet and nutrition is probably one of the most important decisions you will make for your pet because it affects their long-term health, immune system, vital organs, condition of their teeth, coat and even affects their lifespan, so educate yourself and choose wisely.
