What Should I Feed My Labrador Retriever?

About Labrador Retrievers
The Labrador Retriever originated off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada on the island of Newfoundland. He was originally named after the capital city of Newfoundland, referred to as the St. John’s Dog, and was bred to help the local fishermen fetch ropes, haul nets, and retrieve the fish that escaped the nets. Today, most Labs spend their days being loved by and loving their people.

Feeding Recommendations
Labrador Retrievers can become obese if overfed. We recommend feeding your Lab three to four cups of high-quality, premium dry dog food spread over two meals daily to maintain his energy level. Make sure to look for a veterinary-developed formula made in the U.S.A. and free of grains such as wheat, soy, and corn.

Nutritional Requirements
The nutritional needs for your Labrador retriever include a high-protein diet from quality, whole-food sources such as fish, lamb, and chicken. Because of his activity level, your Labrador Retriever requires a more energy-dense formula than less active breeds of dogs. Protein between 18 and 22 percent and fat percentages of 10 to 12 percent are essential for his dietary needs. Real meat (no by-products) should be listed first on the ingredient label, followed by plenty of fruits and vegetables. These will help him absorb the vitamins and minerals that are necessary for his overall health. Look for a holistic blend that contains Glucosamine to support your Lab's bone and joint development and Taurine for his heart health. An antioxidant-rich formula that includes Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids will help keep his coat glossy and skin healthy. Prebiotics are ideal to keep his digestive tract functioning properly and contribute to reducing stool volume. Choosing a premium dog food is beneficial to your Labrador Retriever's longevity and helps provide his individual nutritional requirements.
