Papillon Diet

What Should I Feed My Papillon?

About Papillons
The Papillon, which is French for butterfly, is today's version of the small spaniels frequently observed in paintings from centuries ago. His fringed upright ears resemble the outspread wings of a butterfly. Once known as the dwarf spaniel, the Pappy’s appearance has changed over the years. He has graced the laps of ladies and kings and still makes a wonderful companion today.

Feeding Requirements
Toy breeds need to eat differently than their medium- and large-sized counterparts because they have very high metabolic rates. Despite their small size, they burn calories very quickly. Because your Papillon’s stomach is relatively little, he can only ingest so much at one time, so it is important to feed your Papillon more than once a day. Your Papillon has delicate knees and should not be allowed to become overweight. We recommend feeding him one-quarter to one-half cup of dry, high-quality, premium dog food spread out over two to three meals. The best choice is an all-natural, grain-free, holistic formula developed by veterinarians and made in the U.S.A.

Nutritional Requirements
The goal for your Papillon is to maintain proper weight and health. To do this, make sure to avoid food with corn, wheat, and soy. These grains are fillers that contain no nutritional value and can lead to serious health issues. In fact, they are allergen triggers for toy breeds. Real meat is a source of protein and should be listed first on the ingredient label, followed by a variety of fruits and vegetables. Your Pappy requires 40 percent protein because of his energy level. Vegetables should make up another 40 percent of his diet. Healthy starches are also essential to your Papillon’s overall health. They help blend the food in a natural way. A diet created especially for your Papillon will ensure his health requirements are met.
