What Should I Feed My Saint Bernard?

About Saint Bernards
The Saint Bernard’s original purpose was guarding Switzerland’s Hospice Saint Bernard grounds. He was also used to help find and rescue injured or lost travelers from the treacherous Alps. He is talented and excels in the show ring, weight pulling competitions, and obedience trials. Today, the Saint makes an ideal family companion. He's a kind, gentle, intelligent, good-natured giant-sized dog. While there are longhaired and shorthaired varieties, the shorthaired version was preferred by the Saint Bernard Hospice monks because ice built up in the longer coats.

Feeding Requirements
Your Saint is prone to obesity, which is hard on his joints and can result in arthritis. We recommend a moderate amount of exercise and feeding him five to six cups of high-quality, premium dry dog food a day, split between two meals. This will help prevent bloat, which is fatal in giant-sized breeds. Choose a an all-natural, holistic formula made in the U.S.A. and developed by veterinarians. Your Saint Bernard is also prone to allergies, so avoid any food containing corn, soy, or wheat, which are allergen-producing fillers that add no nutritional value to his food.

Nutritional Requirements
Your Saint Bernard has unique nutritional needs as a large-sized breed. He requires a high protein diet to provide him the necessary amino acids for proper joint and bone development as well as energy storage. The primary source of protein should come from real meat and be listed first on the ingredient label. Also, look for whole fruits and vegetables as well as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids on the label to help keep your Saint's coat glossy and his skin healthy. The best choice is a formula that is created specifically to address the individual needs of your Saint Bernard, such as his age, activity level, and existing health issues.
