Samoyed Diet

What Should I Feed My Samoyed?

About Samoyeds
The Samoyed dog breed was originally bred to herd reindeer, haul sleds, and hunt. He was a worthy companion for Northwestern Siberia’s Samoyedic people. Some of his jobs included tracking, pack hiking, and warming their masters at night by sleeping on top of them. The Samoyed is a working breed that can be strong-willed but is also a loving, sensitive, and loyal family dog. The slight, albeit discernible, upturned corners of the Samoyed's mouth is known as the Sammy smile. This happy, good-natured, intelligent breed is affectionate with everyone in the home and happiest when he is actively part of the household.

Feeding Requirements
Your Samoyed is an active and sociable dog with a big appetite. We recommend feeding your Samoyed one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half cups of premium, holistic, all-natural dry dog food a day, divided into two to three meals. Look for a formula that is made in the U.S.A. and developed by veterinarians. A grain-free formula will help avoid allergies, and fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy provide no nutritional value and can lead to serious illnesses.

Nutritional Requirements
You should feed your Samoyed a high-quality diet consisting of a minimum of 22 to 24 percent protein and between 12 and 15 percent healthy fats. Real meat should be the first ingredient listed on the label of the dog food you select, followed by an abundance of whole fruits and vegetables. A poor diet can cause your Samoyed to have a dull coat, shed more, and produce body odor, but an antioxidant-rich food containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids supports a shiny coat and healthy skin. A good source of Glucosamine will help keep his bones and joints developing properly. The best choice is food that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of your Samoyed.
